What to Expect During a My Aged Care Assessment
Once you have applied for My Aged Care, an assessment will determine your support level. Here’s what to expect during the process.
1. Applying for an Assessment
Once registered, you can apply for an assessment through:
- Online Application: After registering, you can apply for an assessment through the My Aged Care portal.
- Phone Application: If you prefer, you can call My Aged Care, and they will guide you through the application process on 1800 200 422.
After submitting your request, My Aged Care will review your information and determine the type of assessment required based on your needs.
2. What Happens During the Assessment?
The assessment is designed to evaluate your eligibility and determine the level of support you require. Here’s what to anticipate:
Eligibility Check
The assessment will confirm whether you meet the eligibility criteria for government-subsidized aged care services. This includes reviewing your health, mobility, and daily living needs.
In-Home Visit
Most assessments are conducted in your home to ensure the assessor understands your environment and personal circumstances clearly. You are welcome to have a family member, friend, or carer present during the assessment to support and help communicate your needs. Most assessments are conducted in your home to ensure the assessor understands your environment and personal circumstances clearly.
Questions You’ll Be Asked
During the assessment, the assessor will ask questions about:
- Your current health and any medical conditions.
- How you manage daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care.
- Any existing support you receive from family, friends, or other services.
- Any challenges or difficulties you face in maintaining your independence at home.
Identifying Your Needs
Based on your responses, the assessor will determine what aged care services best suit your needs. This may include:
- Personal care (help with bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.).
- Domestic assistance (cleaning, meal preparation, and household tasks).
- Social and community support (assistance in staying connected with your community).
- Home modifications (installation of safety rails, ramps, etc.).
- Nursing care (medication management and health monitoring).
- Respite care (temporary relief for carers).
3. What Happens Next?
After the assessment, you will receive a formal decision about your eligibility and the level of care you qualify for. If approved, you will be provided with:
- A support plan outlining the services recommended for you.
- Information on how to access approved service providers.
- Guidance on the next steps, including choosing a provider and setting up your services.
If you are found ineligible, you will receive information on alternative support options available in your community.
