For many low-income individuals and families, accessing affordable credit can be challenging. High-interest loans, payday lenders, and credit cards often lead to cycles of debt that are difficult to escape. The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) offers a fair and responsible alternative, providing essential financial support without the burden of interest or fees.

What is NILs?

The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) is a community-managed microcredit program that provides fee-free and interest-free loans to low-income earners in NSW and across Australia. This initiative helps individuals and families access essential goods and services without financial hardship.

How Can a Loan Be Interest-Free?

NILS is a program developed by Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand and supported by the Australian Government, National Australia Bank (NAB), and other community organisations. It operates on a circular community credit model, meaning:

  • Loan repayments from past borrowers help fund new loans for others in need.
  • The program is not-for-profit and designed to help people, not generate profit.
  • It ensures safe and fair access to credit without interest, fees, or hidden costs.

Because NILS is funded by repayments from borrowers and supported by Good Shepherd, it can continue to assist individuals without charging interest or fees.

What Can a NILs Loan Be Used For?

NILS loans are designed for essential purchases, not cash or paying off existing debts. Eligible expenses include:

Borrow up to $2,000 for essential goods and services such as:

✅ Household Essentials – Whitegoods, appliances, furniture, and bedding
✅ Car Repairs & Registration –
Roadworthy certificates, servicing, and essential repairs
✅ Medical & Dental Costs –
Treatments, mobility aids, and prescriptions
✅ Technology –
Laptops, tablets, and mobile phones for education or employment
✅ Education Expenses –
School fees, uniforms, textbooks, and supplies
✅ Employment Needs –
Work uniforms, licenses, and training courses

Borrow up to $3,000 for:

✅ Housing Assistance – Rent in advance, bond, and rates
✅ Natural Disaster Recovery –
Essential replacement items following emergencies

How Do NILs Loans Work?

Applying for a No Interest Loan is simple and involves the following steps:

1️⃣ Check Your Eligibility – NILS is available to low-income earners, including those on Centrelink or holding a Health Care/Pension Card.
2️⃣ Find a NILS Provider –
NILS loans are available through community organisations, like FOCUS Connect and other providers found via the Good Shephard website here.
3️⃣ Apply for a Loan –
Apply with the required documents, including proof of income and an outlined purpose for the loan.
4️⃣ Loan Approval & Payment –
The funds are paid directly to the supplier or service provider, ensuring responsible spending.
5️⃣ Affordable Repayments –
Repayments are structured based on what you can afford, keeping financial stress to a minimum.

Eligibility Criteria for NILs Loans

To qualify for a NILs loan, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

1. Low-Income Threshold

Applicants must meet at least one of the following income-related conditions:

  • Earn less than $70,000 annually (before tax) as an individual
  • Earn less than $100,000 annually (before tax) as a couple or household with dependents
  • Have experienced family or domestic violence in the past 10 years
  • Hold a Health Care Card or Pension Card

2. Capacity to Repay

To ensure responsible lending, applicants must show they can repay the loan without financial hardship. This is assessed based on a simple calculation:

Total Income > Total Expenses + NILs Loan Repayment

Your application may be approved if your budget shows you can comfortably repay the loan.

3. Residency Status

NILs loans are available to non-permanent residents of Australia, including those on temporary protection visas and bridging visas. If you are on a temporary visa, the loan term must not exceed the expiration date of your visa.

4. Time at Current Address

Ideally, applicants should have lived at their current address for at least three months. However, this requirement may be relaxed for individuals in:

  • Transitional housing
  • State/community housing transfers
  • Situations of family violence, homelessness, or incarceration transition
  • Remote areas where proof of residency is difficult to obtain

Where Can You Apply for a NILs Loan?

NILS loans are available through community providers like FOCUS Connect and other local organisations across NSW. To find a NILS provider:

  • Visit Good Shepherd to search for a local provider near you.
