Understanding Domestic Violence in Australia

Domestic violence remains a significant issue across Australia, impacting individuals from diverse backgrounds. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse. These actions are often part of a pattern aimed at gaining control in relationships. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, one in six women and one in sixteen men have endured violence from a partner since the age of 15. These numbers underscore an urgent need for ongoing support, intervention, and community awareness.

Recognising the Impact of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence leaves deep scars, affecting not only the immediate victims but also the broader community. Many survivors experience prolonged emotional trauma, physical injuries, and social isolation. Children exposed to domestic violence may face increased risks of developing emotional and behavioural challenges.

Efforts from national and regional organisations, along with government initiatives, aim to address and reduce domestic violence. Programs like the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022 reflect the commitment to creating safer communities across Australia, providing a foundation for both prevention and support services.

However, domestic violence continues to be complex. Many survivors face barriers to escaping abusive situations due to financial constraints, social stigma, or fears of escalating violence. In culturally diverse communities, language barriers and differing social expectations can further complicate access to support. Addressing these unique challenges, we can help break the cycle of abuse and create a future where everyone can live safely and without fear.

Casework and Community Engagement through MDFSV

Through our past initiatives, FOCUS Connect provided direct support to families impacted by domestic violence through Multicultural Domestic and Family Violence Support (MDFSV) casework. We are a not-for-profit organisation, who has worked for over two decades to support our  culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and multicultural communities in Campbelltown, Macarthur, and South West Sydney. Our initiatives have provided holistic family support services, addressing issues such as parenting, housing, finances, relationships, and social isolation, with special attention to domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV).

One-on-One Support

One of the cornerstones of our work was providing individualised casework support. By addressing the complexities of coercive control and its impact on relationships and family dynamics, our team worked one-on-one with individuals to guide them toward stability and empowerment. This tailored approach allowed us to address the specific needs and challenges faced by each person in a sensitive, respectful manner.

Social Education and Group Programs

In addition to one-on-one support, we organised group programs that fostered social education and provided a pathway to healing. These programs included gender-specific sessions for both men and women impacted by violence, creating a safe space for shared experiences and mutual support. Through activities and open discussions, participants could connect with others, reducing feelings of isolation and finding community-based support.

Creative Outreach for Healing and Support

Recognising the healing power of creativity, FOCUS Connect also hosted community support groups, fostering a safe and encouraging space for individuals to connect through artistic expression. The Men’s Domestic Violence Support Group engaged in activities like designing concrete pavers and mosaic tiles, promoting camaraderie and mutual support. Similarly, our Women’s Domestic Violence Support Group allowed women to express themselves creatively, helping to rebuild confidence and resilience.

In partnership with local schools, we facilitated a special project where children impacted by family violence created artwork, providing them with a constructive outlet to process their experiences and emotions.

Why Support and Awareness Matter

By working together to end domestic violence, we can build safer communities. This means educating people, showing compassion, and making real changes in our systems. We need to create a society that supports survivors instead of judging them. When we do this, survivors will feel less ashamed or afraid to ask for help.
