In the early 1990s, Harold Leslie Burton, fondly known as Sonny, became a volunteer with FOCUS Connect. He may have joined simply to lend a helping hand, but his journey with the organisation turned into something far more impactful—an experience that enriched both his life and the lives of those around him. His dedication stretched over decades, leading to an unforgettable journey filled with purpose, camaraderie, and an impact that reached across the Campbelltown community. Sonny became more than a volunteer; he became a beloved community figure.
Sonny's commitment to service was recognised in various ways, from being nominated for the prestigious 'Order of Macarthur' to meeting two Australian prime ministers, including John Howard. However, the true measure of his dedication lies in the relationships he built, the support he offered, and the memories he created within FOCUS Connect. His connection to the group wasn’t fleeting or impersonal; it was deeply rooted in a shared sense of purpose and camaraderie, visible in his collection of memorabilia that includes photos, certificates of appreciation, badges, ID tags, and volunteer t-shirts from various events and outings. Recently, during a review visit to Sonny’s home, his care coordinator was moved by the pride he takes in his collection of FOCUS Connect newsletters, brochures, certificates, and his cherished volunteer shirts, all prominently displayed as a testament to his years of dedication. Each item in his collection serves as a testament to his unwavering passion and is a vivid reminder of the countless lives he touched.
When health issues led Sonny to step down as a volunteer in 2015, his ties with the community he served did not end. Instead, he became a client of our Aged Care services, now on the receiving end of the same support and connection he had once worked tirelessly to provide. This transition from volunteer to client could have been bittersweet for some, but for Sonny, it was an extension of his lifelong relationship with the Social Support Group. He was no longer there to serve others, yet he found in the group the same sense of belonging, mutual respect, and emotional support that he had always valued.
The Social Support Group continued to play a significant role in Sonny's life, especially as he navigated the challenges of ageing and health concerns. Attending the group sessions became a form of therapy, a space where he could draw strength from familiar faces and supportive voices. Although his health now limits his ability to participate as frequently as he would like, Sonny still makes the journey from Bargo to Campbelltown whenever possible, determined to stay connected to the group that has given him so much. He continues to inspire others with his love for his community, and his resilience in the face of adversity.
The Multicultural Social Support Group that Sonny cherishes provides far more than social interaction. For him and many others, it has become a vital part of their mental and emotional well-being. The weekly sessions offer structured opportunities for connection, designed to foster relationships among the elderly in a culturally inclusive environment. The group’s commitment to celebrating diverse backgrounds is central to its success, as it allows members to share their unique traditions and experiences while building a supportive community. It’s a model that acknowledges and respects the rich cultural tapestry of its members, fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and understood.
For Sonny, these sessions serve as a lifeline. In the company of friends, he finds emotional resilience, an antidote to the isolation that can often accompany ageing. The group helps him remain mentally sharp, keeps him engaged in conversations that matter, and provides a space to share both his struggles and triumphs with people who genuinely care.
Through FOCUS Connect, Sonny has found a community that continues to support him, just as he once supported it. His journey from volunteer to client is a testament to the enduring value of connection, service, and the power of community care.
